About the book
This book is written for the general reader. It is not a definitive or comprehensive study of Mau Mau. Its value as research material lies in its primary nature, and in the paths it opens for further inquiry. It is an eyewitness account of the fight in Kenya's forests by one of the principal leaders of the Mau Mau revolt of 1952 to 1957.
Henry Kahinga Wachanga was well placed to know the events in the Aberdare forests from January 1952 to December 1955. Beyond his firsthand knowledge of the forest, he was aware of happenings in the Mount Kenya forests, the European settled areas, the African reserves, and the towns, because of his role as Mau Mau general secretary.
He was frequently present at the forest meetings where the big leaders, Stanley Mathenge, Dedan Kĩmathi, and Mbaria Kaniũ, made major decisions. Indeed, he influenced and formulated some of them.
Perhaps the time for remembering and understanding the past and its effect on post-independent Kenya is at hand.
